TRAVEL REPORT
Sept. 10 – 14, 2012
Manila

Field Trip Overview:

Before you proceed reading, I just want to say that this is not just a simple documentation. What was written here was the story of the most valuable and memorable five (5) days of my life as a student of the USeP (University of Southeastern Philippines) under the IC (Institute of Computing) department enrolled in FTS subject. Months ago, we were given the chance to choose what we want for the fieldtrip if we want it to be conducted only in Mindanao or outside Mindanao. Majority of the class chose outside Mindanao so that’s it. Maynilad Tours & Educational Services Inc. proposed to us their itinerary and we all agreed with their arrangements and they were chosen to cater us. Things were processed by the officers and our facilitator that’s why the fieldtrip was made possible.

The fieldtrip was scheduled September 10-14, 2012. Under those five days, I learned so many things, things that I’ll never forget and things that I’ll bring up until I took my last breath. From Day 1 up to the Last day (day 5), I wrote what happened to me, what I did, what my feeling was and everything that I want to write. Pictures were also attached based on the happenings day by day.

I hope you will enjoy as you go on reading my “Five-day story”.

FIRST DAY: September 10, 2012
This day, I went on a company visit to:
DOST (Department of Science and Technology), Bicutan
Traffic Engineering (MMDA) at EDSA, Makati

The feeling of “First time” was what I felt. A night before my flight, I’ve already packed my things up. I woke up at around 3:30 am and prepared my self. I arrived at the airport at around 5:30 am and funny things happened. I forgot to print my itinerary and I said to my self “OH MY GOSH!” and good thing was that one of my classmates brought one and when the airport guard asked me where was my itinerary, I told him that my classmate was holding mine. And “gaaa! I ESCAPED!” with a big smile. We proceed to the check in counter and we got our boarding pass after weighing our luggage. We went upstairs and took some photographs there (just for remembrance and documentation). After taking pictures, we paid for the terminal fee which is exactly 200php. I really did not forget what was told to us by our instructor that we must pay the exact amount or else we will see at the court (Oh! This made me laugh). After that, we waited at the departure area for more than an hour. While waiting for the plane, of course, picture taking occurred. I have my own camera so I was the one who took THEIR pictures. That’s the disadvantage of having your own camera. Your role would be a cameraman/woman. Okay, move on. This is it! We heard an announcement and we prepared ourselves for the flight and the guard checked our boarding pass and “gaaa! AIRPLANE, here I come!”
I sat at the seat where I was intended to. After take-off, almost every one of us changed our seats and I took photographs while waiting. I took photos of the clouds and some good views under the plane. I was so amazed how wonderful the feeling was being on the plane. After almost two hours of waiting, we heard an announcement from the captain that the plane was about to land so we went back to our designated seats. After landing, we went off the plane at around 9:45 in the morning and took my first step at the Manila International Airport.
We waited for our luggage for a while until the tour bus (which were the big and small bus) arrived. I was assigned to the big bus and I chose a seat beside the window so I can took nice photographs. The tour guide from Maynilad warmly welcomed us and he introduced himself as “Kuya Karlo”. Before the tour started, yummy breakfast meal was distributed to us and I took my very first meal in Manila. While on our way to our first company visit, Kuya Karlo was talking about the history of some places in Manila. He gave us a lot of information about the places there. And one thing I love about Kuya Karlo was that, he really had a good sense of humor and he really knew how to deal with us.

What I Learned?
We arrived at our first company visit at the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Bicutan. I was amazed with their place because they have a lot of trees and other plants surrounding their buildings. We entered into a hall and the DOST staffs greeted and welcomed us. The discussion started and the speaker started to talk about the project NOAH and also their future plans and projects. Though I felt like my eyes were voluntarily closing, I still did my best to listen to the speaker. The speaker also discussed about the IPV4 and IPV6 which was the only topic that I can somehow relate. The speaker was giving some freebies which caught my attention. And horray! I got my DOST keychain. Though the speaker shared us a lot but I can still feel that there was still emptiness. We asked some questions and I observed that the speaker’s answer was not exactly what we are looking for but I can still appreciate that the speaker really did his best to answer our questions. I only think of some positive views that maybe in our next company visits, we will find what we are looking for.
After we had our discussions, we were back to our seats on the bus and we took our way to Aberdeen court in Makati City. It is an old hotel and restaurant with Chinese buffet. We took our Chinese-inspired lunch there. The food there was really good and satisfying. I took again some photographs there and I also took photos of the foods. Done with our lunch and we took our way to our next company visit which is the MMDA.
We had our discussions with the two speakers of MMDA (I forgot their names) and they informed us about their operations. I was so amazed with there CCTV cameras that it is capable of zooming up to one (1) kilometer. We went to their communications and command center. They have separate operations in monitoring the weather condition, traffic conditions, and they also have some personnel receiving calls from people who needed their help. Unfortunately I was not able to enter to their data center because it is prohibited.

What I Liked?
After the MMDA visit, we took our way to the Mall of Asia (MOA). While on our way, I took photos again of the establishments and I also took photos of some kids enjoying their swim at the river (I forgot the river’s name).  At around 5:30 pm, we arrived at MOA and “gaaa!” (feeling-of-first-time-and-still-can’t-believe). We window shopped and went to the ice-skating rink of the mall. After strolling, we went outside the mall and witnessed the sunset in Manila Bay. There were some performers there who really caught my attention. They were like, portraying a character and they keep on talking like chipmunks which really made me laugh. I took a picture of them and one of the performers, the one who had a scary getup, he walked towards me and I don’t know what I ate but I was really scared and I ran. They laughed at me and I was like freezing and I feel like there’s something on my feet that I can’t move it. After that, I took photos of the sunset, and I also took photos of my friends and we relaxed ourselves until heavy rain fell. We ran to the one of the establishments there and we all agreed to took a ride of carousel while waiting for our dinner. We paid 50php for the ticket and there! We were like kids happily taking our ride (and it’s good to feel like going back to your childhood days). At around 7:00 pm, we all gathered at Giligans, a restaurant near Manila Bay and took our bountiful dinner there. After dinner, we went picture taking and we gathered ourselves going to the hotel. At around 8:00 pm, we checked in at Kabayan Hotel in Pasay.
Me, with my five girl friends assigned to room 218 and I was tasked to be the group leader and the key holder. We went to our room and arranged our things and took our bath and we talked and shared our experiences that day. My friends fell asleep but me, I am still in the state of adjusting because this is really my first time of being away from my mom and dad. I already missed them. They were left in Davao and I really missed my spongibobbie pillow. I tried to divert my attention by writing notes on my hello kitty notebook and I texted my mom and dad just to say goodnight (though I am still not sleepy).
At round 12:30 am, our FTS president together with our instructor, knocked the door and checked if we are all complete. After they checked us, I already fell asleep. Though quite exhausted, I really enjoyed my first day in Manila.

What I didn’t like?
The DOST speaker did not answer the questions properly and their presentation is mediocre. As if they were not prepared for that day’s event. Though frustrated by what happened, I can still appreciate that they did their best to give us information about their operations.

SECOND DAY: September 11, 2012
This day, I went on a company visit to:
Y4IT, UP Diliman, Quezon City
Second day in Manila! I woke up at around 4:30 in the morning and I prepared the things needed for this day’s activities. I checked the itinerary and this is the Y4IT day. I took my bath at around 5:30am. I and my girls took our breakfast and I chose egg and ham with coffee for breakfast. I took photographs while we were having our meal. At around 7am, we assembled ourselves inside the bus and we took our way to the University of the Philippines Diliman.
On our way to UP Diliman, the bus made a little tour outside Aquino’s residence and unfortunately, when I took a photo, I got a bad angle of the gate because the bus already moved going to Pinoy Big Brother House. I just want to say this; I’M NOT REALLY A FAN OF BIG BROTHER. We went to PBB house and just took some photographs there with my friends (you know, for the documentation) and though not a fan, I enjoyed our visit there. After our visit at PBB house, we already moved to UP Diliman.

What I Learned?
The group arrived at UP Diliman around 8am and I’m so overwhelmed with the place. The university really has a big area that they have their own hospital, police station, jeepneys, dormitory, and they also have their own souvenir shops. The university is like a city within a city. We went to UP oblation statue and took some photos their before going to the convention area. We had our registration for Y4IT (Philippine Youth Congress Information Technology). We entered and stayed at UP’s Bahay ng Alumni. We were given souvenirs from Y4IT which were the Y4IT bag, Y4IT notebook and Y4IT ballpen. The program proper started at around 9:00 am and I got surprise that the first speaker was our Instructor, Dr. Randy S. Gamboa, and I am proud of it. He delivered some words of wisdom and while he’s delivering his speech, I really waited for a good angle and I took a photo of him with a good angle. The next speaker after our instructor’s speech presented a movie clip of animation they made. I am quite amazed with their work because I know it’s not an easy task to do some animation. The speaker explained how they did the animation and they also discussed briefly the history of animation. After the animation thingy, I really got bored with the next two speakers and I really felt the heaviness of my eyes. What I did was, I randomly looked for subjects and took photos of it. And the clock struck 12:00 and TIME FOR LUNCH!
Packed lunch was distributed to us. I so love the deliciously cooked pork adobo. I happily ate my meal and DONE! After that, we proceed to the UP Theater and I was not able to listen to the speaker anymore because I fell asleep. I really got tired that time. After an hour I think, I woke up and I witnessed the UP guitar orchestra’s performance. I took photos of them and another speaker delivered her topic. I am still in a woozy state that time and I really can’t focus on what the speaker’s saying. The convention ended and we got our Y4IT certificate and foods were distributed to us for our merienda.

What I Liked?
Before leaving UP Diliman, we went to their souvenir shops and I bought UP slings for my friends. At around 5pm, the group already gathered at the bus and we proceed to our next destination, TRI NOMA!
We arrived there at around 6:00 pm and all we did was picture taking. After the picture taking, the group gathered at the bus for dinner. We went to Tramway Restaurant in Timog, QC. We took our Japanese-inspired dinner there. After dinner, the group agreed to take an MRT ride going back to the hotel. While on the ride, I really feel the heaviness of my eyes and by this time, my head is already aching. I just ignored it because I don’t want to spoil the moment of MY-FIRST-MRT-RIDE. We arrived at the hotel at around 8:00 pm and I took a shower and rest. I fell asleep. After almost two hours I woke up because of a knock on the door. I opened it and I saw our president and he just checked if all of us were in the room already. After that, I took a rest for tomorrow’s activities.

What I didn’t like?
Some of the speakers really have good topics but the way they deliver their topics is not that good but I can still appreciate them.

THIRD DAY: September 12, 2012
This day, I went on a company visit to:
PLDT INNOLAB in Mandaluyong
SSS in East Ave in Quezon City

Here we go! Third day of our fieldtrip and I already planned to wear my dress with polka dots. Same as second day, I woke up around 4:30 am. Though I’m already awake, I did not move out from the bed because I really felt the exhaustion from second day’s activity. At around 5:15 in the morning, I decided to move myself out from the bed because (no choice) I have to. I took a bath, prepared the things needed and took our yummy meal for breakfast. I took photos of my friends while they were taking their breakfast and I also took a photo of my meal. After our meal, the group assembled at the bus and prepared ourselves for the first company visit of the day.

What I Learned?
First destination was PLDT in Mandaluyong. We were told by the tour guide (Kuya Karlo) that cameras are prohibited inside the company and unfortunately, I was not able to take photos of our visit there. Anyway, we arrived at the company around 8:30 am so we still have time to do whatever we want while waiting for the time. Ten minutes before 9:00 am, we entered the building and one of the company’s staff brought us to the meeting room and when we got there, we were given name tags and the discussion started. The first speaker delivered her topic and after her speech, she toured us to the area where the company’s memorabilia placed. After the tour, we went back to the meeting room and the second speaker started to discuss about the company’s operations. I was amazed with their systems and the security of the company. There were things discussed about how they form connections, performance of the company from the year it was build and how they work to improve the company’s performance and the services they were giving to their clients as the year passed by. I learned a lot from our company visit there so out of my curiosity, I asked some questions to the speaker and he really knew what the questions were because he was able to give definite answers and I was really satisfied with his answers. We took another tour and by this time, we went to the room where the company’s operation’s taking place. After the tour, we gave thank to the people who accommodated us and PLDT visit ended there.
We went back to the bus and packed lunch was distributed to us. After we took our meal, we proceed to the next company visit at Social Security Systems (SSS) East Ave., QC. By this time, we are allowed to bring our cameras and while walking through he company’s building, I took photos of their cute fountain and fish pond. When we got to the convention area, we chose seats which were comfortable to us. The seminar started with a prayer and we sang the national anthem and the speaker began her speech. I am very interested with the topic that the speaker was delivering. She discussed the history of the SSS and gave us an overview of the process to be a SSS member. After the first speaker delivered her topics, another speaker from the tech division delivered her topic. I and my girls listened carefully to what to the speaker’s saying. She discussed a lot about the operation of their department. After she delivered her topics, we are tasked to asked questions and there, the group bombarded the speakers a lot of questions. I asked questions to the speaker especially from the speaker from the tech department and I was not satisfied by her answer. She said that she did not know the deeper side of the tech especially in hardware and software terms.

What I Liked?
I was surprised that by asking questions, I got an SSS ball pen, a remembrance from their company and I got happy of the ball pen that they gave to me. After the question and answer portion, we had our picture taking with the SSS staffs and we leave the company’s building with smiles. I can say I had a good experience with the company. The group assembled after the company visit and we took our way to Intramuros. I took photographs of the place and I was amazed how they preserve the old infrastructures there. It’s like going back to the Spanish era. After Intramuros, we proceed to the Luneta Park. I took a lot of photographs there and I really love the place. At around 5:30 pm, we’re all gathered inside the bus and we proceed to Tutuban. I am quite exhausted by that time but I have to fight the exhaustion. We arrived at Tutuban around 6 pm and it’s shopping time! I and my girls accompanied each the whole duration of our shopping time. I just bought small items for myself and some pasalubongs for my friends. Before I forgot, we were given 200php for our dinner. We strolled the place to look for a fast-food chain for our dinner. We found an establishment (I forgot the name) that serves fried rice with toppings. We took our dinner there after our meal, we go back to the bus and I took a nap while waiting for others.
At around 8:00 pm, we went back to the hotel and I arranged my things and prepared my sleeping clothes and while waiting for my turn to take a shower, I doodled on my hello kitty notebook (and this is my stress reliever) while chit chatting with my girls. YES! Shower time. After shower, I doodled again until I fell asleep.

What I didn’t like?
Though disappointed because I was not able to take photographs at PLDT, I understand why they don’t allow cameras inside their building. Let’s go to the SSS speakers. I observed that the speaker from the tech department is just good with her slides. When we asked her questions regarding the operations of their department, she was not able to answer those questions and she said “I actually don’t know what about that because I don’t know the deeper side of IT.” And I just to myself, “OH MY GOSH!”

FOURTH DAY: September 13, 2012
This day, I went on a company visit to:
Laguna Electronics, Canlubang, Calamba City a.k.a Tsukiden

I can say that this was my favorite day. You’ll know as you go on reading (wink *.*)
I woke up earlier than wake up call. Good for me. Prepared again my things for today’s activity and by this time, I brought extra clothes ‘cause this is the Enchanted Kingdom day! Yey! After our breakfast at the hotel, the group assembled and we proceed to Tagaytay. While on our way, I took photographs of the establishments and road signs.
The group arrived in Tagaytay at around 9:00am and we excitedly tried horseback riding. I was really scared of fallin’ down from the horse. After that, I got busy taking pictures of the good view of Taal volcano. I also took photos of my friends because they always keep on requesting me to take photos of them. Okay, and my role is a camerawoman. After the horseback riding area, we went to Tagaytay peoples’s park. When we got there, I got busy again taking pictures of them, AGAIN. We bought t-shirts, wallets, and key chains for pasalubong. I also bought a cute head dress for my self. After our Tagaytay activities, we went back to the bus nd took our lunch and we proceed to Tsukiden.

What I Learned?
Honestly, the name of the company really tickles my ears. I don’t know why I always found myself laughing everytime I heard the company’s name. We entered to the company’s building and I was surprised that we have to take off our shoes and we have to wear the company’s slipper (TSUKIDEN SLIPPERS). A staff from the company brought us to a room where they’ll conduct the seminar. I took photos of the speaker’s presentation. The speaker discussed their activities that they have a slogan making contest, history of the company and schedule of the company and I think it’s not necessary to discuss anymore. I really don’t know if I’ve learned something because the speaker’s topic is really far from what I am expecting. The company visit ended and we proceed to our next destination.

What I Liked?
Gaaaa! Enchanted Kingdom time! And sleepy head was gone. While on our way to Enchanted Kingdom, tickets were distributed to us. We arrived there at around 4:00 pm and we decided to take our first ride on Space shuttle. At first I was hesitant if I will try that ride because I am really scared of rides, honestly. But my mind told me that I have to try because this is just for now. We started at the space shuttle and next was the anchor’s away, the swing, Carousel, 3d thingy, Riogrande, and the last is (I forgot the name of the last ride we took). After that, we changed clothes because we’re all messed. After changing our clothes, we’re all gathered for dinner. We went to Taste Asia and took our dinner there and went back to the hotel.
This is our last night in the hotel. I arranged my things and weighed my luggage. After that, I rested already for the next day’s activities.

What I didn’t like?
I really don’t like this day’s company visit because I got bored with the topics presented by the speaker. How can I relate with their schedules that I’m not even one of their employees?

FIFTH DAY: September 15, 2012
This day, I went on a company visit to:
J.P. Morgan Chase, Bonifacio Global, Taguig
Last company visit on the last day of fieldtrip.

Woke up at around 5:30 and prepared myself because this day, we will check out from the hotel. I surrendered the room key at the counter and took my breakfast with my girls. Before leaving the hotel, the group did the picture taking. I feel like, I will really miss the group. Time came that we have to leave and proceed to our last company visit in J.P. Morgan Chase. While on our way, the group sang “Farewell to you my friend” and it really moved me.

What I Learned?

The group arrived at J.P. Morgan Chase at around 9:00 am and again, like PLDT, cameras were not allowed due to security purposes.
J.P. Morgan Chase is a big financial company that takes clients for big and small businesses and they have clients throughout the world. This company is the strongest financial company not only in U.S but throughout the world. Though there were financial crisis in U.S., this company did survive.
After some discussions, staffs toured us from the canteen up until to their video conferencing room. They also have meditation room for those employees who wants to relax. They also have free drinks for their employees, customers, and visitors. After the tour, they gave us J.P. Morgan chase ball pen for remembrance. The company visit ended with picture taking and then we went back to the hotel for lunch.

What I Liked?

J.P. Morgan Chase was really amazing that they maintain there good performance in financing industry since 1799. They were really incredible on how to handle problems especially when there is a financial crisis.
After our company visit, we prepared ourselves for our flight back to Davao. The group arrived at the airport around 4:00 pm and our flight back was 6:15 pm and I got home around 8:00 pm and I was very thankful to see my mom and dad again and for the successful fieldtrip.

What I didn’t like?

The speaker talked much about the company’s history and performance and he don’t even know about the technical services of the company.

Appendix

Recommendation
For the next Batch of enrollees in this subject, I highly recommend the PLDT for the company visit. Next are the MMDA, SSS and J.P. Morgan Chase. I really discourage you to choose DOST and Tsukiden. Better look for a new company in replacement of those two companies.
